While vaping may encourage some cigarette smoking initi- ation,11 12 inhibit smoking cessation13 14 and promote relapse,15 16 vaping has been shown to help many smokers quit smoking cigarettes1721 and displace smoking by those who might otherwise have become regular ciga- rette users.2225 In Canada, young adult smoking rates declined at the same time as NVP rates increased,26 27 while daily NVP use among adults has been associated with increased attempts and successful smoking cessa- tion as well as increased dual and exclusive NVP use.28 However, most adults were found to use NVPs to remain abstinent from smoking.29 The Canada SimSmoke simu- lation model inferred an NVP- related relative reduction in smoking prevalence from 2012 to 2020 of 15% for all adults and more than 30% reduction for those ages 1524.30 That study inferred the impact based on differ- ences between smoking prevalence from surveys and model projections but did not explicitly consider transi- tions involving NVP use
